New Year, New Blog

This year I hope to write more often. Since I've started this blog in 2005 it seems little has changed in my interest in food and the environment. Now more than ever my interest is going strong. The culmination of my environmental journey has led me to Antique, Panay Island where I do work to preserve biodiversity. The organization in which I am the founder and President has its roots in Antique, where I now live most of the time. Since I've moved, I've been living a sustainable life in my bahay kubo by the beach, fully made of sustainable materials, no refrigerator, no airconditioning. My electric bill is more or less 1,000php. My water comes from Mag-aba springs. And I am fully wired. So life couldn't be more wonderful!

Next step for me would be to acquire some farmland. Do some bee farming, some goat herding, some chicken cooping... In the meantime I am looking into make organic soaps, detergent, and cleaning products to sell in the local market. The plastic garbage situation is dire. The Mayor has stopped garbage collection and left it to residents to dispose of their garbage. While biodegradables such as fruit peelings, leftovers, etc. is easily disposed by giving it to those who have pigs to raise, it is much harder to dispose of plastic. Most of the time it's either burned or left there. The accumulation of plastic garbage on the beaches and streets is not only unsanitary it also poses a danger to wildlife who mistake it as food or get caught in the debris. It would be a great benefit to be able to acquire household products using reusable containers, lessening the amount of disposable plastic. My idea is to sell organic household products wholesale, where customers bring their own containers and products are sold by weight. I no longer use plastic bags or any disposable containers, bringing reusable bags and containers with me to market.
